Bothwell Castle - Combat Re-enactment -1314

There was a mock combat battle today at Bothwell Castle - courtesy of - 'Historic Scotland' - and the - 'Carrick 800' - battle re-enactment society.

Based on the events of the 24 June 1314 - Robert the Bruce - King of Scots - defeated the English Army of Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn.

The next day, Edward Bruce - the King’s brother - arrived at the gates of Bothwell Castle to force Bruce to surrender.

And so battle commenced ..............

This was a really good day out, and the participants were both friendly and helpful throughout the day, and happy to take time to explain their passion for the group.

Glasgow Festival Show - 2011

Took another trip up to see the Glasgow Show today.

Poor organisation saw us wait for almost an hour in a queue before we could get in to the show. Never experienced this in any of the other events we've attended in the past.

Waited patiently and had a good spot to watch the 'Rockin' Horse Stunt Show', but then advised that they had altered the schedule and we missed this event because of this. Again, very poor as this was the main attraction as far as we were concerned.

So al in all, this was a good day out partly spoiled by poor organisational skills on the day.

The PS Waverley is always a lovely site as she passes at speed.

She's had a mixed season for sure this year, so let's hope things improve over the remainder of the summer.

Around The Clyde

After a game of golf, then some shopping, went down to just catch the 'Adonia' as she canted off Greenock and then departed on the next leg of her cruise.

Stopped off at the James Watt Dock on my way home and caught the 'Ayton Cross' as she was leaving, and the 'Colonel Templer' in the Garvel Dry Dock having been recently sold.

Busy Morning on the Clyde

First up was the 'Prinsendam' Cruise Ship as she arrived in Greenock.

This was an unscheduled stop as she was expected to be in Oban, but as bad weather was forecast she arrived here and we benefited locally.

Next was the Paddle Steamer 'Waverley' - steaming past Greenock en-route to pick up her passengers in Largs for a day's excursion.

Tall Ships Race 2011 - Greenock Event - Day Four - Departures

With more than a tinge of sadness we watch the departure of the Tall Ships and their Crews as they leave Greenock on the next leg of their race.

It has been a very rewarding four days, plus another few with the early arrivals.

We were privileged that they docked in Greenock and as it was in 1999 they last came here, it will no doubt be some time before we host them again.

The crews have been tremendous ambassadors for their ships and countries, and brought liveliness to this area while they were here.

Haste ye back.

Tall Ships Race 2011 - Greenock Event - Day Three - Fireworks

Tonight was the turn of the Firework Display, which in truth proved to be surprisingly short.

It's a pity it didn't last longer as we enjoyed the little we saw.
